The one thing that remains true about Musiq Soulchild is that he's forever creative and forward thinking. He's managed to separate himself from the wheat of the Neo-Soul shaft of Maxwell and D'Angelo and hold his own all the while remaining New Soul to the bone. What we love about him most is that he pelts out some of the most beautiful love ballads that will stand the test of time. His style is funky & eclectic but something about him remains reachable and down to earth. Get Togetha imagines his pad style to be reflective of his funky and stylish roots and his ability to take chances with his signature laid back style.

The White House is known for its rose garden. Its vegetable garden? Not so much. But First Lady Michelle Obama is trying to change all that. For the first time since World War II, there's a vegetable garden at the White House. In April, Obama, who promotes healthy eating, invited local children to help plant the garden. Last week, she invited them back to harvest lettuce, snap peas, beans, kale, collard greens and chard and to sample the goods.
This garden is no PR stunt -- the produce has been put to good use. Prior to the harvesting event, the White House kitchen staff used about 90 pounds of vegetables from the garden, and they snip herbs for the Obama family's meals every day.
When your mother is Diana Ross style is in the genetic code. Yet there's something about Tracee Ellis Ross that let's us know that she would have her own style regardless of where she came from. Tracee has managed do what many a child of a celebrity stardom have difficulty doing: She's carved out a name out for herself in spite of having an superduper iconic and mega-beloved mom. Her mother was a Supreme for heaven's sake! But it's through the grace and power of her "grown and sexy" that you think of Tracee as Tracee; her alter ego, Joan; her killer figure; her big hair; and her ability to make fashion (high and low) seem so darn effortless. It's like does she get ready in 15 or 20 minutes? It's only after these thoughts that you remember who her momma is -- and that's a good thing.

As a seven-year breast cancer survivor who had a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery and a myomectomy, you could say she's familiar with those who don white coats.
So when the 43-year-old Harlem woman went into her gynecologist's office one February morning for what she thought was early menopause, she was in for a big surprise.
"I said go ahead and waste a perfectly good pregnancy test," laughs Nelson. "So [my doctor] does the test, and she comes back and she was so excited. She literally came skipping back in and she said, 'my God, Sharon, you're pregnant! Isn't that wonderful?' She was so excited. I became frozen. I didn't know what to think. I had been cancer free for six years at that point. It was crazy, because I could not fathom it."
This is the same gynecologist Sharon Nelson called when she noticed a pinkish discharge from her right breast and who scheduled her first mammogram, which revealed stage 1 breast cancer. The very same doctor who, several years before, oversaw Nelson's fibroid-removal surgery and who had been treating her for 25 years.
One in 19,000 African American women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Nelson not only beat the disease, but she also beat the odds by becoming pregnant .
And just how does a woman who underwent an intense chemo regimen, and whose "uterus looks like swiss cheese," have a baby while in her forties?
"That's an answer for the big man upstairs, because I have no answer and neither do my doctors," says Nelson. "It's quite an anomaly. Let's put it this way -- my plastic surgeon has been practicing close to 25 years now, and he's only seen a case like this once. And my oncologist, who has been practicing for 20 years, has never seen it before."
Nelson, who was a single career girl of 36 when she received news of her breast cancer diagnosis, got five opinions and opted for a mastectomy and round of chemo as a course of treatment. And though she stayed focused during her treatment, she said she couldn't help think about what all this meant for her love life.
"Think about it, I was a single person when I had my diagnosis. And the most disturbing thing for me was thinking 'Am I ever going to date again?' I kind of felt like I was going to become the Chevy with the one door with the different color. It's an odd way of putting it, but that's the way I felt."
To tell the truth, Nelson's dating life was not without its ups and downs. She remembers dating a stock broker for eight months, only to never hear from him again when she told him she had had cancer. But she also recalls telling the man who is now her husband of her diagnosis on their first date.
"I'm so intensely private, and it's hard, but I felt comfortable with this person from the first date," she recalls. "I told him I got a mastectomy, and it was such a weight off me to be able to release that."
Nelson dated this special guy, Anthony Beauzile, for about two years when one day during the holidays he proposed.
"He said out the blue, 'You know, I think we should get married next year.' So I said, 'that sounds really nice.' That was a January conversation. So February, I realized I hadn't seen my menstrual cycle, and I said here I am going through early menopause. So I made an appointment with my same famous GYN, where we saw an ultrasound with an 8-week-old fetus!"
"I was so happy to find a man that accepts me," Nelson beams. "And I knew that he wanted children, and I was trying to gently bring up this whole adoption idea, very gently of course (laughing), not making it a big deal."
On August 18, 2008, Sharon Nelson delivered a healthy baby boy, Nelson Anthony Beauzile, after what she calls a "great pregnancy" (though it was high-risk.) While at home on maternity leave, she was surfing the Web one day and saw a contest flashing on the screen for a Ty Pennington custom nursery sponsored by Abbott Nutrition's Similacbrand.
The tagline was "tell us why you deserve to have the nursery of your dreams". Nelson submitted her beautiful story, and six months later, was notified that she was a finalist and then a winner. Adorable Nelson Beauzile (named after Admiral Nelson of the British Royal Fleet) got his nursery designed in a nautical theme as a nod to his namesake.
Mom baby, and proud papa, Anthony, are all thriving!
"I want people to know that breast cancer is not a death sentence," she says. "So you do not give up, you do not the pity-party thing, it's not constructive. But you do need to learn how to take the best care of yourself which means getting opinions, writing questions, making sure you're prepared for the interviews that you have for the doctors and always remember you're in control. Nobody can tell you what's best for you and your lifestyle."
This Father's Day will be a somber one for Charlie Wilson.
The R&B-funk veteran and his family members lost their patriarch, Bishop Oscar W. Wilson, to a battle with prostate cancer yesterday.
According to Wilson's spokeswoman, Juanita Stephens, the former Gap Band front man was on his way to hosting Steve Harvey's nationally syndicated radio show when he learned of the news. "Like a trouper, he continued his commitment to the radio show for four hours nonstop," Stephens told BV Newswire today.
The 'You Dropped a Bomb on Me' singer,' was himself diagnosed with the male-reproductive disease last fall and has been a staunch advocate for the Prostate Cancer Foundation to help raise awareness and money for research.
"My father was an incredible man who had a profound effect on our family both as a father and a spiritual guide," Wilson said. "I made a commitment to spread the word about prostate cancer, and with the passing of my Dad, that commitment is even stronger."
Discovering the life-threatening disease early has given Uncle Charlie, as he is known in the hip-hop community, an optimistic outlook on his prognosis. The Gap Band "When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in September, I thought to myself 'I'm too young... this isn't a cancer I should be getting,'" he previously said. "While I was surprised to discover that this disease strikes one out of every six American men, I was astounded to learn that African American men are 1.6 times more likely than others to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. My wife, Mahin, and I are very fortunate. I was lucky to be diagnosed and begin treatment early. My prognosis is excellent."
In addition to appearing on Lil Kim's latest song 'Download,' the 'Yearning For Your Love' singer released his most recent project, 'Uncle Charlie,' in February.
The former homeless drug offender has been working tirelessly on a career resurgence.
Last month, he mesmerized crowds during Tom Joyner's 2009 Fantastic Voyage cruise.
Funeral services for Bishop Wilson, 91, will be held June 23 at 1 p.m. at the Morning Star Baptist Church, 165 E. Cedar St., Lucedale, Miss., 39452.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation at Unclecharliewilson.com.

America is a nation that tries really hard to be sensitive when discussing race and gender -- or even the disabled. We approach these subjects with restraint, choosing our words carefully for fear of insulting others. But when it comes to life-threatening diseases, that reserve seems to get tossed aside by even the most meticulous minds.
Since my diagnosis, a few friends, some extended family members, and random acquaintances have said some downright peculiar things to me. They range from the bizarrely sympathetic: "I couldn't bring myself to call you, but I cried like a baby when I found out you were sick," a family friend told me. I actually felt bad for upsetting her. To the straight-up indifferent: "We're all going to die," wrote one guy in response to my first post. Uh, thanks, I guess.
Although slightly inelegant, shall we say, such comments are really just people's way of showing they care. And while I appreciate the effort, it's clear that it's time for a cancer etiquette intervention.
Consider this list of dos and don'ts as a crash course to navigating your next cancer survivor encounter. Only the basics are covered here. Of course, there are some gray areas (is it okay to be mean to a crabby cancer patient?), mitigating circumstances (should you tell a friend that her drawn-on eyebrows aren't in the right shade or shape?), and times when you just have to make fun of people, cancer or not. In those cases, my advice is do what you have to do. This is simply a primer, a blueprint to ensure that you stay within the bounds of appropriateness. It's not hard. When in doubt, remember flattery is always your ace.
1. DON'T say I'm sorry. We know you mean well, but opt for something a bit more uplifting such as, "Let me buy you a drink for your bravery on the battlefield."
2. DON'T send sappy or generic get-well cards. Is there anything more depressing than the Hallmark sympathy section? Ugh. A good sense of humor is crucial to conquering the cancer beast. Send messages filled with sarcasm and humor worthy of our valor.
3. DON'T say it's only hair. We know it will grow back, but being bald with no eyebrows makes even the prettiest woman look like a Cabbage Patch Preemie. Refer to rule number 6 for more guidance here.
4. DON'T talk to us about survival rates. If I had a cash payout every time someone told me they had a friend whose outlook wasn't so bright but went on to live for many years, I could cover my hospital bills. People battling cancer want to focus on living, period.
5. DON'T spout trite expressions like, "God won't give you anything you can't handle." Trust me, that's one we've figured out already. When overcome with the urge to utter said cliche, refer to rule number 10.
6. DO tell us how our real our wig looks. Good ones aren't cheap. We'll play along. If the cancer patient in your life prefers a bald head, tell her how nicely shaped it is.
7. DOinvite us on a trip and foot the bill. It's been a rough journey; sympathy vacations are always welcome.
8. DO expect us to play the "cancer card." It's the only good thing to come out of all this. We reserve the right to use it whenever it gives us an advantage with a cop, a bill collector...you get the idea.
10. DO tell us how fabulous we are. Going from sickly to simply fabulous is a lot of work. Feel free to compliment us regularly.
Now that you know the basics, charge forth with confidence. Tell a friend, tell a friend of a friend, and let's put those awkward civilian-survivor moments behind us forever.
Last Wednesday, the American Medical Association announced plans to publicly oppose President Obama's health care reform. The AMA, a powerful 250,000-member physicians' group, is against a government-sponsored health care option, which it claims will restrict patients' choices by driving out private insurers. It went on to say that a public plan would also lead to "an explosion of costs that would need to be absorbed by taxpayers."
Maybe I'm confused, but I thought this is precisely the situation we find ourselves in now, hence the need for an alternative.
More than 44 million Americans are uninsured and another 38 million of us are underinsured. Those of us who fall into these categories often forgo medical appointments, preventive care, screenings, and follow-up visits, which result in more late-stage diagnoses and worsening medical conditions. In turn, this places a significant financial burden on the system.
When uninsured Americans get sick, for example, they head straight to the emergency room. According to the National Coalition on Health Care, the uninsured are 30 to 50 times more likely to be hospitalized for unavoidable conditions. And about 20 percent of uninsured Americans rely on emergency rooms as their primary source of care.
This increasing dependence on emergency-room medicine, coupled with the poor management, administrative costs, and inefficiencies of our current health care system, is costing everyone. Those without insurance end up paying more upfront, if they can pay at all, while folks with coverage are watching their premiums rise (between 5 and 10 percent in 2009, experts estimate). What's even more disturbing is that the United States spends more on health care than most industrialized nations, yet we have one of the highest numbers of uninsured residents. Clearly, what we got ain't working.
The president unveiled his plans for health care reform while on the campaign trail, and his critics wasted no time tearing it apart. They referred to his government-sponsored option as "big brother-esque," yet offered little in the way of alternatives. What do these folks propose that we do about the tens of millions of Americans without health insurance? Or the rising costs for people with coverage? Instead, those opposed to the idea of universal care, such as the AMA, throw around terms like "socialized medicine" in a poorly veiled attempt to incite fear in Americans who support free-market capitalism. It's as if the Obama critics want us to believe that the communist fairy is just waiting in the lurks to turn our nation into a government-run camp.
As far as the AMA is concerned, that seems to have been its M.O. from way back. Since the '60s, the group has been vocal about its opposition to government-involved health care regulation. According to a story published last week, in 1961, the group attempted to block Medicare, calling it a varying form of totalitarianism. Word? Medicare? That program that provides health coverage for the elderly and the disabled? Wow.
More recently, during the Clinton administration, the AMA allegedly spent $3 million to defeat Hillary Clinton's universal health care proposal, opting instead to support Republican-backed policies that called for cuts in Medicare spending. And these are doctors we're talking about here.
But today is a different and far more difficult time for our nation. Our economy is in bad shape, and a high unemployment rate means that people are rapidly losing their company-sponsored insurance. In 2007 and 2008, for instance, one in three Americans went without coverage at some point, a startling statistic that proves our all-or-nothing health care system is zero-sum game. It requires all of us to fend for ourselves amid exorbitant costs and red tape, while big companies and big organizations try to convince us that nothing good will come from a government alternative. Other nonsupporters say universal coverage will result in patients waiting for months to see a physician and that the quality of care would be subpar.
How come our only option is to keep what we have or embrace a socialist regime? This is America we're talking about here. I'm certain that we can do better than that. What about a cross between an individual and government-sponsored policy? Something that might resemble a public-private partnership, a plan that allows those with insurance to keep what they have but gives those who can't afford individual care some sort of coverage. Oh, wait, that's what Obama is proposing, and his plan may be the most viable for millions of Americans.
The president is planning to address the AMA today, and I'm eager to hear what its members have to say. So far, they haven't said much.
The work world can be tough. Not everyone can be a C.E.O., or have the luxury of working for themselves. Yet, every job in society is important. From the newspaper seller, to the shoe shine man, when someone does a job well, it greatly improves everyone's lives. Sometimes professions that deeply touch the lives of others pay the least, and the industrious workers in those fields go unknown. The folks in the gallery below receive plenty of adulation now, but even they know what it's like to be underpaid and underappreciated. You won't believe where some of these stars started out, compared to where they are today.

Mary J. Blige: At-Home Hairdresser From From Starpulse.com: "Blige spent the first few years of her life in Savannah, GA, before moving with her mother and older sister to the Schlobam housing projects in Yonkers, NY. Her rough life there produced more than a few scars, physical and otherwise, and Blige dropped out of high school her junior year, instead spending time doing her friends' hair in her mother's apartment and hanging out."
Mary started to make her own way in the world in a profession that many take for granted. The at-home hairdresser is a very important staple of many communities, as she uses her skills to help women who can't afford a professional salon to stay pampered and beautiful.

Denzel Washington: Barber From From Tiscali: "It's often been said that the boy picked up his desire to act from the flamboyant communication that went on around him at this time. He certainly picked up a desire to work - the family ethic was very strong - and young Denzel found himself labouring in barber shops and beauty parlours from the age of 11."
The neighborhood barber is an important institution in many communities. Even though they don't get paid much, men's salons are like private social clubs that allow them to relax and connect at an affordable price. Workers in these establishments not only groom the body -- they soothe the soul.

Ellen Degenres: Car Wash Driver From From CareerBuilder.com: "I actually liked my first job. I was driving cars out of a car wash, you know, once the car comes out, you get in and you wipe it. That was exciting to me to drive the nice cars and wipe down the [dashboard] with Emerald."
We often take for granted all the folks at the local war wash. They may be working for little more than tips, but they keep our cars clean and fresh, making a huge positive impact on our daily lives.

Jennifer Lopez has displayed a high level of discipline and organization in plotting her megastar career. She must have learned those skills during one of her first jobs...

Jennifer Lopez: Legal Assistant From From 2spare.com: "Long before Jennifer Lopez sang, danced and acted her way to superstardom, she briefly traded in her velour tracksuit for a suit of the pin-striped variety while working at a law office."
It's hard to imagine someone as driven as Jennifer Lopez being an assistant, but J.Lo paid her dues by putting others needs before her own to help her bosses meet their goals. It's hard for anybody to put others first, but that's what assistants do in every line of work. They deserve to be appreciated for this.

Before Angela Bassett became a huge star in front of the camera, she earned her living doing business on the other side of the lens.
Michael Tullberg, Getty Images
Angela Bassett: Photo Researcher From From Yuddy.com: "After working as a beauty salon receptionist and photo researcher, Bassett got started with her acting career in New York Theater, after which she landed her first role-as a prostitute-in the 1985 TV movie 'Doubletake,' starring Richard Crenna and Beverly D'Angelo. The following year she landed her first official film role as a TV reporter in 'F/X.'"
Whenever we look at a magazine, or in a book with pictures, we are seeing the work of some one like Bassett in her early career. We never think of the faceless, nameless men and women who look for all the photos that illustrate concepts, news and ideas in every facet of our daily lives, ranging from Web sites to education. But every one of those photos was hand-selected by someone, most often an anonymous, but dedicated and not-to-well-paid pro. What would life be like without all the thousands of pictures we consume every day?

Think you couldn't fall for a scam? Well, even when pennies are tight, a new study says 1.3 million people have fallen for check scams and most of them have been taken for $3,000 or more! To protect yourself, peruse this list of the most prominent scams and keep your money safe.
The New "Oprah" Scam No, Oprah would not ask you for your credit card information via email, so if you get a message saying you've been selected for some special episode and asked to send along your personal data, don't fall for it. The FBI just issued a warning to consumers about this new scam that uses Oprah's popularity to try to separate you from your money, first by thinking you're buying a plane ticket to her how in Chicago.
Find out how you can complain if you get this email by checking Mitch Lipka's latest Buyer Beware column.
Getty Images
"Spear Phishing" This is not your ordinary stab-in-dark phishing scam, but such an extra-dangerous attempt to bilk you from your money that the FBI just issued a warning to consumers.
This is how the scam works: Rather than use a massive email blast, spear phishing attacks choose smaller, selected groups that share something in common. That could be anything from a workplace, to a bank to a website everyone purchased from.
Mystery Shopper or Processor Work from home scams have been around for a long, long time, but thanks to a lousy economy they have become a growth market for frauds.
Many people have been duped by mystery shopping offers, some even combining the lure of getting paid for shopping (after paying a hefty fee for training) and the "overpayment" scam (see the next slide...).
Scammers might also sell you on the idea you could make money processing rebates or do billing. To learn how to enter this lucrative field you are sold a kit and most likely will get hit with subsequent monthly charges. The only ones making money on these deal are the crooks.

Getting Paid Too Much This scam is enjoying a resurgence that folks using classified ads like Craigslist have been seeing. Someone answers your ad and offers to pay way too much for a service that is offered. Sometimes they say it is to pay their mover, who won't accept their check from a foreign bank. Often the person on the other end claims to be from another country. They tell you to keep what you're due and then refund them the rest. Just wait ... their check bounces and you're left high and dry.
Getty Images
The Check Isn't Real The check comes in the mail. It's probably for a few thousand dollars. It's supposed to cover the fees you are to receive for a grant you've supposedly just been awarded, the lottery you've won or some other reward you never sought. Cash their check and then send that amount back to them (makes sense, right?) then you'll get a much fatter check. Problem is their check is bad, but you'll not likely find that out for a week or more -- after your money is long gone.

Your Auto Warranty Is Expiring -- Or Is It? The automated call comes in on your cell phone or home phone. You're told your auto warranty is about to expire and if you don't act right away to keep it current you could lose coverage. Actually, what's happening is you're being sold an extended warranty. For some, the calls are ludicrous; they don't have cars. But for others they can be scary and, at a minimum, annoying and uses up minutes and battery time on your cell phone. The Better Business Bureau reports a huge spike in the number of complaints against those selling auto warranties.

The Nigerian Letter This is one of the classic scams that just keeps coming back for more. It presents itself in new and different forms -- recently using a bogus note from the director of the FBI himself as the come-on. The Nigerian letter, also known as 419 fraud for the section of Nigerian law it violates, involves an e-mail (it really started as a letter) that seeks your help to stash some money for a foreign official in a jam. Your kindness in hanging onto their millions is supposed to be repaid by giving you a percentage. Instead, you end up sending your money to them.
Getty Images
Stimulus for Crooks Whether it's letters supposedly from the Small Business Administration, bogus e-mails from the Internal Revenue Service or promises of "free" advice to get government grants, frauds are exploiting the idea that the federal government is distributing economic stimulus money. These phony notes solicit personal information intended to give the bad guys access to your credit or worse -- your cash. Remember, if something that appears to be from the government asks you for all sorts of personal information it's more likely from a crook trying to stimulate his or her own bank account.

What a Car Deal It starts out with an ad for a car, most recently featuring people claiming they are about to be deployed with the military. The car is priced way below market value because they have to sell it quickly. You contact the seller and are told that you have to pay to an escrow service that they chose. The price is so good you don't want to lose out, so you agree to place a deposit or even pay the full amount to the "escrow service." It turns out it's not an escrow service and you don't end up with a car.

Breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer -- the list of cancers that disproportionately affect African Americans is long and scary. Skin cancer, usually associated with people with fair skin, is not on that list. In fact, many blacks believe that the pigmentation in their skin protects them from this particular form of the disease.
It's true that dark skin provides some protection from UV rays and that blacks are less likely to get skin cancer than others, but it is dangerous -- and potentially deadly -- to assume that because you have dark skin you are immune.
"Pigmentation doesn't give you a free pass," Dr. Charles E. Crutchfield III, a dermatologist with African American skin cancer patients, told CNN recently. "It doesn't matter what color your skin is, everyone can get skin cancer."
Studies show that when blacks do get skin cancer, it is often discovered at a later stage and is more deadly. Musician Bob Marley, for instance, died of malignant melanoma, an aggressive skin cancer that spread to his organs.
Sunscreen is the first layer of defense against the sun's dangerous rays, but a Consumer Reports poll shows that while 67 percent of people identifying themselves as light-skinned wear sunscreen, only 27 percent of dark-skinned people do. Experts recommend that everyone, regardless of skin color, protect themselves with SPF 15 sunscreen.
For black people with skin cancer, melanoma will usually appear in places where there is less pigmentation, like the palms of the hands, bottoms of the feet, under nails and on the genitals, but it may look different based on skin tone. The best way to be safe is to get any suspicious growths or moles checked out, just as you would a lump in your breast. It may be less likely that you'll have skin cancer, but no one is immune.
I liked the gag better when I thought it was real. It's nice to know that despite all of the serious craziness engulfing us right now that we are not completely cynical -- yet. We can still fall for the "gotcha" and have fun doing it. Like so many others, I felt compelled to write about my observations and the implications of homophobia and Eminem's emotional stability as soon as Sacha Baron Cohen landed his butt in Em's face. *clears throat* This was very serious social commentary, right? Wrong. MTV now confirms it was all scripted and staged:
The head writer for the MTV Movie Awards has settled the debate: The stunt involving Sacha Baron Cohen and Eminem at the MTV Movie Awards was completely planned. Comedy writing veteran Scott Aukerman wrote in a posting on his blog that the incident was staged and rehearsed in advance. [snip] Aukerman's posting has since been removed. His manager didn't immediately return a call Tuesday. Source: Eminem/Bruno: Yes it was staged, Huffington Post
So, pop a bottle and have a good laugh at yourself and at me and all the others who discussed this goofiness ad nauseum.
Do you know the details of the new credit card legislation signed by President Barack Obama? Well, now you will have all the facts. Dr. Boyce Watkins, a Finance Professor at Syracuse University, breaks down the credit card legislation in this video. Americans are experiencing massive amounts of default in the current financial crisis, and African Americans are the greatest victims of the economic downturn. Black unemployment has reached 15%, which is nearly double the rate of unemployment for white americans. This massive black unemployment has impacted African American family finances nation-wide.

UPDATE:This stunt may have been staged. -- If you didn't know, Sacha Baron Cohen's cinematic follow-up to his hugely successful, hilarious and offensive 'Borat' is coming out in July. It's called 'Bruno,' and Baron Cohen's promotion of his latest alter ego provided a startling moment during last night's MTV Movie Awards. In fact, I have to say, Eminem was a model of restraint when Baron Cohen, dressed as Bruno, came down from an aerial stunt and landed head first in Eminem's lap with his practically naked butt pushed into Em's face. Did you see that? Watch:
For the most part, I appreciate Baron Cohen's brand of humor, although I also recognize the mean streak in it. Sometimes I find myself laughing out loud while squirming uncomfortably. Baron Cohen thrives on poking fun at the narrow world views of unsuspecting people. In the trailer for 'Bruno,' we see Baron Cohen take on the fashion industry, homophobia and celebrity interracial adoption. Click here to see it.
Since Baron Cohen's latest character is the flamboyantly gay fashion reporter Bruno, it is likely that Eminem was targeted not only because so much attention was on the 'Relapse' performer, but also because of his reputation as a "tough guy" homophobe.
My take? I think it was nasty on Baron Cohen's part. I may not be a fan of Eminem's work, but I respect that he has been very vocal as of late about struggling to overcome a drug addiction and his desire to live life more healthfully. (It was Elton John who convinced Eminem to get help.) I think the message of recovery and living positively is one that many, if not all, of Eminem's young fans need to hear, and I'm disappointed that it was overshadowed by a sideshow showdown with Bruno.
Eminem, don't bite. It was a lame publicity stunt. Keep moving on your path.
Who inspires you to make the world a better place? Below Black Voices presents a few of our favorite living heroes: women and men who are making history with their good works in the here and now. Take a look at our photo gallery, and then tell us in the comments are below who you didn't see on our list that ought to be there.
Faye Wattleton Since 1995, Wattleton has served as the co-founder and president of the Center for the Advancement of Women, a non-partisan think-tank that conducts women-focused national opinion research. But before that she made history as the first black woman and the youngest president ever elected to Planned Parenthood, a position she held for 14 years. The St. Louis native helped the organization become the seventh largest charity in the United States. Wattleton earned her master of science degree from Columbia University and now is a trustee of the university.

Russell Simmons Since founding the first major record label to prominently feature hip-hop artists, Def Jam Recordings, in 1984, this Queens native followed up that success in the music business with other successful entrepreneurial efforts such as Phat Farm clothing line and HBO's 'Def Comedy Jam' and 'Def Poetry on Broadway.' These days, the Goodwill Ambassador and father of two has committed his life to philanthropic efforts. In addition to penning a New York Times best seller, 'Do You!: 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success,' the yoga enthusiast has also dedicated his energy to the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, which fosters political activism among the hip-hop generation, as well as the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding.

Oprah Winfrey Reportedly the richest black woman in the world, she's also arguably the most powerful and influential businesswoman around. But Oprah Winfrey is giving back now more than ever -- so much so that her philanthropic efforts could leave just as much of impact as her multiple Emmy Award-winning eponymous daytime talk show. The Mississippi native has raised more than $51 million for her Oprah's Angel Network charity, which serves underprivileged people around the world and $21 million for Hurricane Katrina victims. In 2007, she made headlines for establishing the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls near Johannesburg, but she's also been helping to educate the future generations of African Americans under the radar. In 1989, she established the Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholarship Fund at Morehouse College, which has since provided scholarships to 250 Morehouse students from around the country. To date, she's contributed $12 million to the black college and says her goal is to put 1,000 Morehouse men through school. Just last month, she also donated $1 million to her friend and former Essence magazine editrix Susan Taylor's mentoring program, National CARES Mentoring Movement.

Bill & Camille Cosby Even on his hit sitcom, 'The Cosby Show,' iconic comedian/actor, Bill Cosby stressed the importance of education and stayed true to his beliefs by incorporating Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) into the series. Though he's been critical, as of late, of what he sees as misguided priorities where education in the African American community is concerned, both Bill and his wife Camille are avid supporters and financial backers of black colleges. Bill, an alum of Temple University, and Camille, an alum of Amherst College, have given back to their alma maters, as well as donating millions of dollars to Fisk, Central State University, Florida A&M, Shaw, Meharry Medical College and Bethune-Cookman College. The couple made history by donating $20 million to Spelman College, making it the largest gift in the history of black institutions. Those funds allowed for the creation of the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Academic Center, which houses the school's fine arts, social sciences and humanities departments, as well as a library and archival program of international African Women's Research & Resource Center.

Earvin "Magic" Johnson This former NBA Lakers player won five championships and three MVP awards before retiring in 1991, shortly after announcing he had HIV. But, for the better part of the past 15 years, he's been a leader in the business world, using his celebrity to foster partnerships with some of the most well-known brands in America. Now, Johnson's considered the top athlete for corporate endorsements, and he continues to provide access to these products and services to impoverished communities. Seeing the need for a source of entertainment in inner-city areas of Los Angeles, Johnson joined forces with Sony Entertainment to create the Magic Johnson Movie Theaters, with subsequent locations in Atlanta and New York. He has since partnered with Aetna on health care initiatives, Best Buy, Starbucks, T.G.I. Friday's and 24 Hour Fitness.

Waris Dirie The Somalia native was forcibly circumcised at the age of five. The traumatic experience stayed with her through her life and motivated Durie to dedicate her life to education on female circumcision. After Dirie ran away from her homeland famed photographer Terence Donovan discovered her in London, which led to her face appearing on the cover of the 1987 Pirelli calendar. She left the fashion industry after 10 years to work as a United Nations Ambassador for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation. Waris, 44, who has since published a three-part series of autobiographies, 'Desert Flower,' 'Desert Dawn,' and 'Desert Children,' now is a citizen of Australia and lives in Vienna with her son, Sharmarke Abdullahi.

Tom Joyner His nationally syndicated 'Tom Joyner Morning Show' is heard by over 10 million radio listeners, but this Tuskegee, Ala., native is so proud of his education at Tuskegee Institute that he's using that influence to positively impact the lives of students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) all over the country. Through his Tom Joyner Foundation, HBCU students who might otherwise drop out of school due to financial difficulties are awarded scholarships. To date, he's raised over $55 million, a great deal from his annual star-studded Fantastic Voyage cruise with Royal Caribbean. He recently launched a new scholarship program, the Full Ride Scholarship, which will be awarded to a high school senior accepted into an HBCU in the fall of 2009.

Susan Taylor In 2007, Taylor left her post as editorial director of Essence magazine to focus on her mentoring initiative, Essence Cares. Previously editor-in-chief of the best-selling black women's magazine, the Harlem native is one of the most influential African Americans in the country via her books and public speaking engagements. The former Negro Ensemble Company actress has now renamed Essence Cares, the National CARES Mentoring Movement. And, she has high hopes of pairing one mentor with every at-risk child in America, one city at a time. With big-named pals like Oprah Winfrey pitching in $1 million donations to the organization, she's sure to continue inspiring young people across the nation.

Meet Dr. Benjamin Solomon Carson, Sr. At just 33 years old, he became the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. In 1987, Carson made medical history with an operation to separate a pair of conjoined twins, becoming the first surgeon to successfully save both twins. He has done two additional operations since then, including one that lasted 28 hours. In 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush for his work as a surgeon and for improving the lives of America's youth. Just like Carson, there are other Black people demonstrating true acts of heroism in their kind acts to others. Take a look.

Sheryl Lee Ralph This original 'Dreamgirls' cast member found fame on Broadway, television and film, yet chose to commit herself to increasing awareness on HIV/AIDS outside of the big spotlight. Since founding The Diva Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to this cause and in memory of her friends that passed away from the deadly virus, the "Jamerican" diva used her talent and celebrity to enlist the help of her superstar friends for an annual fundraising concert, "Divas Simply Singing." Everyone from Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, Ledisi, RuPaul, Fergie, Jennifer Lewis, Patti LaBelle and Nancy Wilson have graced the stage at the event since 1990. Ralph followed that success with 'Sometimes I Cry,' a one-woman play inspired by real-life stories of women coping with HIV/AIDS. In 2005, the National HIV/AIDS Partnership honored Ralph with their Red Ribbon Leadership Award at the United Nations.
The king of pop also ruled the media -- from TV to blog buzz -- and his visibility drove sales. See how online conversation spiked alongside sales of his music.
Essentially two kinds of people existed in the '80s: Coke drinkers and Pepsi drinkers. And if you loved Michael Jackson, you had good reason to fall into the latter group.
Michael Jackson went from being Gary, Ind.'s most talented kid to one of the most recognizable human beings on the planet. And while his worldwide album sales were astounding, that wasn't the sole reason for his fame. his ascendancy went far beyond the cash register—he inspired dance moves, dictated fashion trends and raised awareness for social causes around the globe.
Growing up in Toronto as a first generation child of Guyanese immigrants may be hard to balance for most. But for singer Melanie Fiona, it provided her with the best of both worlds.
Growing up in Toronto as a first generation child of Guyanese immigrants may be hard to balance for most. But for singer Melanie Fiona, it provided her with the best of both worlds.
A week after Michael Jackson's death, organizers of what would have been a 50-show run at the O2 Arena in London have made significant strides straightening out what one touring executive called "the biggest mess in the history of our business."
Billboard has learned that Michael Jackson was working on two albums at the time of his death: one in the pop vein that made him famous and another that would consist of an instrumental classical composition.
Growing up in Toronto as a first generation child of Guyanese immigrants may be hard to balance for most. But for singer Melanie Fiona, it provided her with the best of both worlds.
The Michael Jackson funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Sources said AEG Live, which owns the arena and the adjacent Nokia Theatre, will use both facilities and the surrounding plaza.
The circumstances surrounding Michael Jackson's death have become a federal issue, with the Drug Enforcement Administration asked to help police take a look at the pop star's doctors and possible drug use.
Michael Jackson had a mountain of unreleased recordings in the vault when he died — music that is almost certain to be packaged and repackaged for his fans in the years to come.
Armed with its first album in nearly 14 years, Alice in Chains singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney tell Billboard.com the band's new album "Black Gives Way To Blue," which is due out September 29 on Virgin/EMI, doesn't stray too far from the Seattle band's influential catalog.
In the days following Michael Jackson's June 25 death, fans flocked to record stores and digital music outlets to purchase one last memory. And merchants say they expect the Jackson sales surge to last for weeks—maybe even months.
Aerosmith's next album might be "on the bench, in pieces," waiting for the group to resume recording after it finishes touring in mid-September, but guitarist Joe Perry's next solo album is just about ready to go.

Get ready for a makeover! Lip Enhancement at-home . Natural ingredients, easy to use, and it works! TheSmileShop’s Restorative Lip Serum:
How to apply?
1. Swipe the lip applicator on your lips, press lips together to spread the serum.
-you’ll feel a cooling, hydrating sensation. This means the pure pepermint extract is working to condition your lips ( a soothing ingredient to heal minor lip cracks).
- a sheer gloss will coat your lips. Thank you quick-absorbing, organic jojoba (pronounced ho-ho-ba) oil, an ingredient that mimics the lipid content of the skin and your lips are thirsty for it, they don’t have this! Jojoba also contains myristic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties, that works to keep bacteria out, creating a smooth, non-flaky lip appearance.
2.Apply your favorite lip product of choice: Liptint, Lipgloss or lipstick.
- you will notice how the lip color spreads evenly, without flaky patches…..mmm…aha… surely the deep-penetrating lip serum formula plumps your lip cells, exactly why your liptint and glosses looks better.
3. If using a liptint, you may want to top it with gloss! A sheer “just-bitten” look, allowing your natural lip shade to shine through.
then…you’re done! Nothing beats lips that are soft, plump and healthy-looking.
Nothing to Hide: TheSmileShop’s Restorative Lip Serumis made from 100% natural botanical extracts. People-tested (moms, dads and kids). Patient-approved Formula! No mineral oil. No Petroluem.
Good dental habits begin early, caring for your kids' teeth, will spare you from expensive dental bills.
The CEO of the Cooperative Research Centre for Oral Health Science, and the Head of Dental Science at The University of Melbourne, Professor Eric Reynolds, describes ToothMousse Plus as a new step forward in oral health care. “Laboratory tests and clinical trials have shown Tooth Mousse Plus not only provides the highest level of fluoride protection now available for teeth, but that it can also repair existing decay damage. It’s the result of a real team effort by molecular scientists, dentists and formulation chemists.”
How to Use Tooth Mousse?
1. Clean teeth thoroughly using a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste.
2. Immediately follow with an application of tooth mousse. This should be a pea-sized amount smeared directly onto the teeth with your finger. For patients with orthodontic retainers, the tooth mousse can be placed inside the retainer adjacent to the teeth.
3. Repeat this process twice a day. The most important time for usage being prior to bedtime where the tooth mousse will remain in the mouth overnight.
The tooth mousse is documented safe to use in children and does not interfere with the actions of fluoride products.
Excellence:
An esteemed prize for Excellence in Innovation has been honored to The Cooperative Research Centre for Oral Heath Science (CRC-OHS) at The University of Melbourne. This research was presented by Cooperative Research Centre Association (CRCA) at its annual symposium which has acknowledged the distinctions of ToothMousse Plus.

Studies confirm that cleaning the tongue will significantly retard initial plaque formation and reduce total plaque accumulation on the teeth.
Another secret weapon in the fight against bad breath is tongue cleaning using a tongue scrapper.
The back of the tongue is the prime breeding spot of anaerobic bacteria that creates odor-causing Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC's). Gently scraping the deep pockets of your tongue is a simple, yet incredibly effective way to dramatically reduce bad breath.
This is a great way to start your morning with. After brushing, you simply use this, and finally, you use a mouthwash of your choice. The difference is immediately obvious, and your mouth will feel so much better throughout the day. With just one use, you'll wonder how you ever started your day without it.
